Tascam FW-1082 and Sony DVW-A500
Posted by Mike on September 13, 2005 at 5:57 pmHello all. I’m in the market for a new audio mixer. I’m thinking about the Tascam FW-1082 but was wondering if I could use that with my AJA IO and a digibeta(Sony A500) deck. If so, how would you connect everything? Here’s my list of equipment that matters.
Apple G5 dp 2.7
AJA IO
Sony A500
JVC SR-VS30UMy main concern is can I export a cut through the mixer to DigiBeta? My SDI out (AJA IO) acts a little funky sometimes. I think it might be a Tiger issue even though I have the latest drivers installed. I know this may seem like a lot or even a dumb question. Yet, I’d rather be safe than sorry.

September 13, 2005 at 10:53 pmYou will hear many opinions on this subject. This is my opinion. Simply take the SDI video cable out of the DVW-A500 and stick it into the SDI video in of the AJA I/O. Select SDI EMBEDDED AUDIO on the AJA I/O Capture Presets, and you will have perfect digital audio between the Sony and the AJA. When you output back to the DVW-A500, push the SDI Audio button on the front panel, and the AJA will output SDI embedded audio to the DVW-A500, right thru the video cable. Keep your existing cheapo mixer, and use it for simple analog monitoring of the outputs of the AJA I/O and DVW-A500 – but don’t actually pass any audio thru it. Everything is SDI embedded audio. Simple, cheap.

September 14, 2005 at 12:22 amThanks Bob. The SDI out from the IO to the SDI in on the A500 was working fine until I updated to Tiger. Now when I select the SDI on the front of the deck, my audio and video lights stay flashing, meaning no signal. Have you or anyone else out there incurred the same problem? I just want to have options. If my SDI out (IO) doesn’t work for whatever reason, I’ll change my settings to RGB 10bit out. I know SDI is much better, but what good is it when you are having problems. Don’t get me wrong, I love my IO. I just want to have a smooth workflow especially when I have a client sitting right behind me.

September 14, 2005 at 1:02 amTiger has nothing to do with the flashing light. Have you updated your AJA IO drivers, and installed the AJA I/O control panel? When you do this, and open the AJA IO control panel for the first time, it will automatically update the firmware for the AJA I/O. I urge you to do this. Once you do this, go into FCP, go to easy setups for any AJA I/O setting, and bring up color bars. This will produce
a color bar SDI output on the output of the AJA I/O which should make the flashing go away. If it doesn’t, and you are SURE that you have a good cable, call AJA.A mixer will not resolve this problem for you. When you upgrade anything, make sure you do it ALL THE WAY. (You ARE running 10.4.2, and not 10.4, aren’t you? ).

September 14, 2005 at 1:16 amThanks Bob. Yes, I do have the latest drivers installed and have installed the IO Control Panel. I’ll try what you said and see what happens. Thanks for you input. It really helps.

September 15, 2005 at 4:45 amThe Tascam FW-1082 is great if you want a control surface as well as a stand alone mixer. It’s a little quirky to configure. Use the SDI, far and away the cleanest audio i/o. The Tascam has S/DIF or analog out for monitoring.

September 15, 2005 at 4:50 amOne more thing. Make sure you run the Tascam on a different Firewire bus that your i/o.

September 16, 2005 at 7:57 amThanks Mark. I think I’m going to get the Tascam FW-1082. Would be cool to adjust levels with mixer instead of clicking on the clip. I appreciate the advise.

December 7, 2008 at 9:13 pmHey Mike,
If you’re still out there, would you send me your latest driver for the JVC SR-VS30U. I can’t find my driver file and I need to update a second computer to recognize it as an AV compatible device.J.D.
