Taking a snapshot (jpeg) of my video at the cursor point
Posted by Michael Breault on January 23, 2009 at 12:13 pmI can create a jpeg snapshot rather easily in Sony Vegas. Is there a way to do this in FCP?

January 23, 2009 at 2:13 pmGo to File > Export > QuickTime Conversion. Then select Still Image from the dropdown menu. You can then click Settings to specify the file type and compression.

January 23, 2009 at 3:24 pmDo you mean a freeze frame? Shift-N will do it.
All the best,

January 23, 2009 at 4:19 pmTo take a really quick and dirty screenshot on a mac, hit apple-shift-4. Your cursor will turn into a crosshair. Create a box by dragging, and the system will save it to the desktop.
While the crosshair is enabled, tap spacebar to toggle through your open windows.

January 23, 2009 at 4:28 pmOr, hit apple-shift-4 and the space bar, which turns your cursor into an icon that looks like an SLR camera. Move that over various parts of your monitor and it will automatically highlight various selections, which you can capture as a still by hitting the enter key. It save those pix to your desktop as Picture “#”, as in Picture 1, Picture 2, etc.

January 30, 2009 at 5:16 pmI shoot with a Sony Z1 and import using firewire to FCP HD. What setting should I use in the still image options to export a still frame of video keeping the HD quality and aspect ratio? So far I have only been able to get stills that are distorted.

January 30, 2009 at 5:31 pmThey are anamorphic, like your video. Open the stills in Photoshop and resize to 1920×1080. Yes, it’s a pain, but a necessary pain.
