I’m making the switch to Premiere and have some very basic questions on system. I’m currently running

    MacPro 4,1 (2009)
    Quad-Core intel / 2.26 GHz
    20GB Ram
    GeForce GT120

Main Media Drive: Internal sata 7200 1 TB (not in raid)

I’ve had no issues with FCP, but I find that Premiere is very slow and has to render almost everything just to play.

I’m working with 5D files 1080 in a 720 sequence (used the default 720 30p) since that’s my delivery format and allows me some scaling on my interview footage. I have both source and Program monitors set at 1/2 resolution. Yet there are places where with only 1 track of video I’m getting a red bar and stuttering. In all cases, if I put a second track of footage above the 1st track (1st track is my radio cut with the interviews, I then build b-roll on track two) it requires render, or it stutters and sometimes even freezes. Same thing happens with simple dissolve. There are some other issues, but this is the big one. I can’t believe this is everyone else’s experience since people seem to be raving about PPro. Is there something major I’m missing? I was considering using an external Raid0 (probably the Gtech G-raid 4TB) Of course, I have no more esata connections, but I’m guessing putting in a PCIexpress card to add a slot would be better than just using a firewire 800 connection.

    I’d love some feedback.

    Thank you all.

    I’m having similar issues.
I am working on an animated film and I am having trouble getting my footage to playback real time in Premiere 6. It is making it impossible to edit.

It plays choppy. Will stop on a frame. Doesn’t catch up on the edits.

    Here are my computer Specs:
    MacBook Pro
    2.5 ghz intel core i7
    8 gb mhx DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5

    Sequence Specs:
    24 fps
    1980×1080
    spuare pixels
    progressive scan
    24fps timecode
    48000HZ

    Footage Specs
    24 fps
    1980×1080
    h.264
    file size between 2MB – 300KB

    Sequence length 4:18

I have trolled all of the forums to see if there was anything to change to no avail:
I tried both setting the Project set to MPE with GPU amd MPE with software. No difference either way.
    Playback resolution is at 1/4
    I’ve closed all applications.
    Optimized my drive.
    Restarted.
    Updated to 6.0.2

Anyone have similar issues? Any ideas on my set-up?

Are you editing in a a 1920×1080 sequence or a 1280×720? I thing I realized that my issue. Unlike FCP which uses a ProRes file for everything, (so upscaling or downscaling in a sequence doesn’t matter) if you try to do that in Premiere it has to render every single clip.

If this isn’t your issue…I hope you can figure out your problem as well.

My sequence is at 1980×1080 as are my clips.

Should I work in a sequence at 1280×720?

No, that’s the issue I’m having is I’m downscaling my media in my sequence and my Video card isn’t fast enough. Sounds like you’re doing it right…so as another noobie…sorry, can’t help more than that. Good luck.
