I have been told that synthetic aperture makes video “legal,” but I am wondering about the quality. Recently, I colored corrected a show using synthetic aperture. I sent it out for tech check and was advised:

“I just wanted to make you aware that the black levels are crushed at zero and the video levels were exceeding 100%”

I was careful to adjust the levels so they are evenly distributed using the waveform monitor while color correcting. Is it that all broadcast parameters are lost after making corrections, or is it that synthetic aperture’s automatic adjustments are crude and not intended to meet broadcast quality standards, or could it be that the studio tech, who checked our video, has it wrong or what?
