  • Synching Audio With Film In FCP?

Posted by Richard Boddington on November 29, 2006 at 2:21 am

    Hi,

I have several hours worth of 35mm to transfer next week to HD. My plan was to synch the audio as I transfer at the post house. They can do this easily enough since we used a time code slate.

My question is that since the audio on the HDSR will not be used in the final mix, should I not just import all of the .wav files we recorded on set, and synch the audio my self in FCP? This would of course save me a lot of time and money in the transfer.

But, how easy is this? I have the first 11 minutes of film that I’ve been using to test with to make sure my post work flow will work properly. My off-line to on-line, is working. The post house added in all my audio for what I have.

I’m looking at the .wav files in the viewer and I’m looking for 10 hour code, which is what I see on the TC slate. But the TC displayed in the viewer is nothing close to 10 hour code.

Does FCP have a system where I can punch in the TC number from the slate and have it find and cue the audio, so I can just lay it on the video?

Or would I have to do this all manually via the sound of the slate only?

    Thanks
    Richard

If you have timecoded slates you can punch the timecode you see on the screen into an aux code for the audio file.
Or if you don’t care about the timecode field you can put it in there. Then joining the audio clip to the video will be a snap. Just use the “merge clips” command and select either Timecode or AUX TImecode whichever suites you best.

Ok sounds great thanks. Ahhh since I’m new to FCP can you give me more of a step-by-step for this?

I have the video on the time line and the audio in the viewer. What do I do next exactly?

How do I access this “aux code” for the audio file? What is the menu and what do I select in the menu?

Where is the merge clips command? Is that the command “L”?

    Thanks

Ok you don’t need any clips in the timeline. What you are about to do will create new clips with the audio and video merged.
First you need to set the timecode/aux code for your clips. Open them up in the viewer and then go to: MODIFY/TIMECODE enter in the timecode and hit enter. Once you have done this for all your clips select both the audio and video clips that are to be put together and right click on them and select MERGE CLIPS a window will appear with options for what to merge using. TIMECODE, IN POINTS etc. Select TIMECOME and your done! Hope this helps.
