Sync issues after UPDATE of FCP project from v6 to v7.
Sorry, if this has been covered somewhere, but I searched far and wide for it with no luck.
I am editing a feature, shot on film, then delivered back to me as ProRes HD 422 clips that I am editing in (been great so far).
The sound mixer is recording in 29.97, as was requested by Deluxe and Technicolor for the transfer. The QuickTime files I get back are 23.98.
For the 1st week, the mixer and I used Wave Agent to convert the sound files to 23.98.
I started it in FCP 6, then after 7 days, I got my new system and FCP 7.
Once I updated and accepted the “newer version” of the project file, all the 1st 7 days of synced audio was fine, but nothing else will sync. Even when I try to resync the 1st 7 days, it won’t sync in this project.
I am using the same methods as before and I am quite baffled. I kind of don’t really know what I am specifically asking here, i just figured somebody may recognize the issue.
If it matters, here are my old and new computer specs:
OLD:
MacBook Pro
OS X 10.5.8
2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR SDRAM
FCP – 6NEW:
MacBook Pro
OS X 10.6.5
2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

What do you mean by “nothing else will sync”? You can’t get it to sync in a sequence?

First of all, THANK YOU for replying Jerry.
This situation had left me baffled, so I will try to be as clear as possible in explaining where I’m at.
I am editing a feature shot on film, and delivered back to me as 23.98 422 ProRes HQ QuickTimes with the mixdown scratch audio synced to them.
The on-set audio recorder recorded the files “at exactly 30fps as required by telecine”.
We then used a program Wave Agent to convert them to 23.98.
I started the project on FCP 6 and then upgraded to a new computer and FCP 7 after a week (as described in the original post). The project itself “upgraded to the newer version” as well.
This method worked for days 1-7, all the files that we synced then are still in sync in the fcp7 project. Yet, when I try to sync any of the other footage past those days, it won’t sync up.
Also, when I tested the footage from days 1-7 by attempting to resync it, it also did not sync.
When I say did not sync, I mean it DRIFTS.
I hope i covered it well enough, sorry it is so long. Hopefully it’s not too scattered.

Boy that sounds pretty strange…
The previously sync’d clips still work, but no others do. Did you merge the previous clips into Merged Clips?
Is the new system a “Clean install” or was it just “upgraded from a previous version of FCP?

The system is a clean install. New computer, new OS, new FCP.
The files I was receiving from Technicolor had synced mixdown audio on them already, so I was doing merged clips from a sequence (drag and drop style).
I was syncing the master audio clips to the QTs I got from technicolor in a sequence, linking them together and dragging them into a new bin to create new clips.
NOW I think I found a “FIX”. It’s not the best solution, but it works.
In a new project, if I adjust the WAV audio speed to 99.9% it syncs up perfectly. Somehow, someway, the first 7 days synced fine in fcp6. I must have had one setting somewhere wrong that allowed it to do work although it shouldn’t have.
BUT enough of that, I’m moving forward on the speed change method.
I have read that the batch speed change can be done in compressor, but i didn’t find it to be too easy (and it made me change to aiff).
You know of any good batch audio converters (besides protools)?

There’s Episode Pro 6 with the audio option added and Sorenson’s Squeeze likely has a workflow for this. Might want to look at them… they are slightly different from each other. But those two apps are the premiere desktop encoding solutions.
I was about to suggest the speed change BTW.. it’s been used successfully before.
