  • Switched from NTSC to PAL camera, now ‘Preview disabled’

Posted by Alexander Signer on October 25, 2005 at 10:22 pm

Switched from Sony MiniDV NTSC cam, which worked perfectly, to Sony MiniDV PAL DCR-HC90E and am now unable to Log & Capture. Changed FC Pro 4.5 Easy Setup to DV PAL. Camera follows commands (play, stop, etc.) but preview is disabled. When trying to log I get the error message ‘The operation could not be completed as there is no video’. System profiler sees the camera. I cannot capture in iMovie either. Display is set to FireWire PAL and external video set to All Frames.

Was told that the problem has to do with camera/tape, rather than Mac/FCP.

This is urgent, need to deliver edited video by Thu (and stupidly told client doesn’t matter if NTSC or PAL…). Please help, thanks!

Are you SURE the tape is PAL?

Thanks for replying. Aren’t tapes supposed to be ‘neutral’, neither NTSC or PAL? Anyway, got the tape with the camera, which was bought in the UK, so I assume tape is PAL as well.

[Alexander Signer] “Aren’t tapes supposed to be ‘neutral’, neither NTSC or PAL?”

    Of course.

I was asking about the RECORDED tape, not a blank one.

Again, are you SURE that the tape was RECORDED in the PAL format?

With FCP set to DV PAL, its looking for a PAL signal.

    Something to consider:
You need to create a NEW PROJECT in FCP, with the Easy Setup configured for DV PAL, for everything to be “ready to work”.
