Switch-over from SD to HD
Posted by Ernie Santella on May 1, 2006 at 1:08 pmA couple of questions for the experts. I currently using a G5 DP 2.7, dual monitors, FCP5 and AJA Io-la firewire box into a BetaSP deck. Works flawlessly.
Now, I want to work in HD, but down-convert to SD for delivery. I was looking at the AJA Kona LHe card, but not sure how to hook-up my gear.
I will use my BetaSp deck for now, but want to option of renting an HD deck for input/output when needed. I’ve also got an HD monitor (seperate from my two Mac monitors)
Questions:
-How/where do you hookup the HD monitor?
-How do you down-convert in FCP5 to do center-cut output to SD?
-And with that Kona HLe card, can you also hookup an SD monitor and view SD while you work?Ernie Santella

AJA Tech Support will be able to walk you through hooking up all your gear if you have any further questions beyond the answers you receive here.
[Ernie Santella] “-How/where do you hookup the HD monitor?”
Either via Component or SDI. You have one Component and two SDI outs.
[Ernie Santella] “-How do you down-convert in FCP5 to do center-cut output to SD?”
You don’t do it in FCP, you do it with the AJA Control Panel. You simply select to output your video in SD. You have three outputs and any of them, or even all of them, can be put into downconvert mode. Within FCP, you just stay in HD.

May 1, 2006 at 1:35 pmWalter,
Thanks for the info. I’m just trying to answer some questions before I jump.
Can you work in HD and down-convert to SD and send that out to a component SD monitor in real-time? What I’m really asking is, can I view what it will look like in SD while I work?

As I answered in my previous post, any or all three of the outputs can be switched to downconvert HD to SD. You have one Component and two SDI outputs on the LHe. So if you have a Component monitor, simply switch that feed to SD using the AJA Kona Control Panel. This is all done in realtime via the Kona card.

May 1, 2006 at 1:53 pmI like my AJA Io-la box because it has simultaneous outputs. I can send Component to my deck/monitor, S-Vid to my DVD recorder and Composite to my VHS dub rack.
All the HD cards I’ve seen only have 3 analog output cables. If I send component to the Beta, how can I send S-vid and Composite to the other decks without re-hooking?

You can’t. S-Video will only be available via the Io which does not do a downconvert. You’ll need to loop through your beta deck if that has an S-Video output.
As for Composite, that is possible via the analog Component output of the LHe using the Y only and setting up the AJA Control Panel for Composite output. But it’s an either / or situation. Either Component or Composite, but not both at the same time.

Can you do an internal SD down-convert to SD with side-crop in FCP5 to a quicktime file?Ernie Santella

You would do that manually by dropping your HD timeline into an SD timeline and exporting a self contained movie.
And actually back to your previous question about S-Video / Composite output in realtime. You can probably do that if you put your Io into Input Pass Through Mode. Down-Convert one of the SDI outputs from the LHe and send that to the Io which will then output the SD feed directly to S-Video and Composite for you.
That will also give you a second Component SD feed too from the Io. I’m pretty sure that will work, though I’ve never tried it here.

May 1, 2006 at 2:11 pmGood ideas, but my Io is the la version which is analog only, no SDI in/out.
I guess I will keep the Io-la box. I’m assuming I can do the HD-SD timeline drop, then set FCP to output using the Io box and dub from that.
