suppressing specific colors WITHOUT using hue-sat control

Using the Hue/Sat control, you can isolate certain colors to desaturate. Poke around in it some more. (Specifically the channel control. Note that you can adjust it further beyond the basic drop down.)

That being said, you could also key them out and use the key as a track matte for an adjustment layer (among many other ways to control it).

Also, check out Synthetic Aperture’s Color Finesse that comes with AE. It has a ton of very powerful color grading tools in it.

Change To Color and Change Color are good for a quick fix. Then I second Michael’s suggestion of Color Finesse. You can also get somewhere with curves. Depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.
