  • Suggestions for R3D -> Storm <-> FCP <-> Resolve workflow?

I’ve done a few RED projects, but never like this..

It was a disaster project as I never found a way to reconnect the XML to R3D in Resolve. Given the timeframe, I didn’t have a chance to do it “the right way”. I still have the project available, and can use it as a guinea pig.

  • were editing on QT proxies
  • the proxies were named all kinds of stuff (bob interview wide, bob interview close, bobs apartment ext, and so on..)
  • In Resolve I didn’t find a way to reconnect the R3Ds using the XML from FCP
  • After reading a thread about how Storm saved my ass (or something similar) I downloaded the trial to get going and use this project as, you guessed it, the guinea pig!

FCP XML -> Storm -> Reconnect media. ALL GOOD! Even though the proxies had different names – no problem.

So I thought to myself, what if I export it all as Prores 4444 (I love the performance it gives me at full quality…..), will it use the custom names or will it make clip names based on the original media?

To my disappointment it used the custom names. And Resolve could not reconnect it. I tried the old tricks in the book with EDL comments and path names, etc.. I admit I must have been silly, cause it still didn’t work, and this conform part is not my cup of tea. I’m an artist more than a conform technician dude.

So I wanna know, what’s your workflow? Do you tell the client NOT to label the clips with custom names? Did I miss something in my conform setup?

Dan, Rohit, Peter – do you have some killer tips? Or maybe someone else knows a bunch about this and want to share a little love to fellow colorists (who cannot pay for a conform guy..).

Resolve should ignore the clip names in the first place and go by reel name from the XML, which should remain untouched unless they really botched the transcoding job.

I always have a bit of a struggle making it work in Resolve and I forget exactly what it is everytime. But renaming clips in FCP should not be an issue at all.

If you’d like I can check out your resolve project and see how its settings differ from my R3D based ones.

Did they rename the actual RED proxies or just the clips in FCP?

If all else fails use the “Force Conform With Selected Clip In Media Pool” command. It’s busy work, but at least you can get the job done.

They have renamed the Prores proxies, not the ones in the R3D folders.
Kind of looks like they’ve logged it all in FCP Log and Transfer.

Check the reel name in FCP under clip details. If that’s intact, Resolve should relink.

Also in Resolve make sure getting reel name embedded in the file is enabled
