  • Suddenly Ai File won’t save after being imported in Ae

So I’m working on a project on After Effects with illustrations from an Illustrator file. I compile all the graphics I need on multiple layers in Illustrator and have that one Illustrator file imported into my project. 90% of the times I have no issues…

I usually go back to the illustrator file to make small adjustments and save as and it updates automatically on After Effects. But sometimes randomly, the Ai. file will lock and I get this error :

“Can’t save the illustration. The file may be read-only, or the file is in use by another application, or you do not have required permissions. Please save the document with a different name, or in a different folder or directory. ID: -54”

The file won’t even save if I quit after effects. It’s time-consuming to rename the file and re-link the layers in Ae.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

    I’m on Windows 10, Ae 2019, Illustrator 2020.
