    Slightly OT this one… I’m storyboarding some 3D sequences for a pitch involving deep sea rescue and submarines. I need references and ideas.

    Which movies should I be looking at? (Thought of Crimson Tide, K19, The Abyss so far)

    Are there any sites with examples of other companies sub sea 3D work?

    Are there any tutorials for this kind of thing? The modelling should be ok, it’s the specific deep underwater look I’m concerned about.

    Any leads would be gratefully recieved.

    Below has a ton of some admitedly crappy underwater CG work but it’s a good reference.

    I toured the studio (at that time it was called Dreamquest) that did some of the effects for the Abyss, which was owned by a family friend named Hoyt Yeatman. A lot of underwater stuff was shot in a plexi-walled smoke chamber, then color-corrected. This was pre-digital for a lot of parts of the effect. OT, but hopefully not a complete waste of time.

    I don’t know of a tutorial, but a few basics:

    * use fog, volume lights, or a depth pass to simulate depth fading;
    * use particles to simulate floating particulate matter;
    * use green/blue lighting;
    * shine a volume light through a plane with animated tex above the water to simulate light rays and caustics on the sea floor.
