I’ve played a bit with After Effects for some (very basic) 2D animation. I’m interested if there would be any better programs than After Effects for this (think TV cartoons). I believe Harvey Birdman (and other shows) use Flash, and I’ve used that before, but other than Flash or AE, are there any other programs in use? Just how do they make the 2D animations on these shows? Any insight or points in the right direction would be appreciated, thanks!

Look at apps like ToonBoom Studio, Bauhaus Mirage, or Anime Studio Pro.

Some people even use 3D apps that have a non-photo realistic shader for output that looks 2D.
