Stuffit Expander does not open .sit file
Hello,
I downloaded and installed the free Stuffit Expander program to open the project files for an Invigorator tutorial but the Expander will not work on .sit files according to the error message it kept giving me. The link that was posted in the tutorial to download this software was broken but it did manage to get me to the Smith Micro site where I eventually found the free Expander download.I tried to open the project file from a different tutorial posted by a different author and got the same result.

The version of the Expander I downloaded (the only free version I saw) is:

The problem maybe that you’re on a PC, not Mac.
Try using Zip to unstuff it.

You Mac people are soooo elitist! (JUST KIDDING!!!)Thanks for the response. Unfortunately the file is a .sit file and Windows Zip wants nothing to do with it. The Stuffit expander I installed was a Windows version of the software.

WinRAR recognizes (and unpacks) .sit files on Windows machines.

Surely I’m not the only one having this problem.
Is there a FREE (not shareware or trial version) application that will open these .sit files???
WinRAR and Stuffit Expander (the version that will open .sit files) both cost money.
Why are all of these FREE tutorial project files saved in a format that cannot be opened unless you buy another piece of software???
I know, I know….they’re FREE tutorials so stop complaining, right???

I’ve had the same problem and I have homework due tomorrow that uses data compressed in .sit format. I went to download.com which is a cnet site and downloaded stuffitstandard9 which works on .sit files and doesn’t require a credit card.

Thanks for the info Bob.
I went to download.com and checked it out but found only trial versions.
I was thinking that they would have a free reader like Adobe’s Acrobat and then if you wanted to be able to create the compressed files you could buy the full version.
What can I say – I’m cheap. I guess I’ll just have to buy the software. At least it’s only $25.

WinRAR 3.71 does NOT open .sit files.
Stuffit Expander 12 does NOT open .sit files.
