So, it looks like SonyAVC encodings out of Vegas have something that looks like a studioRGB->computerRGB conversion that I have no control over. I end up with crushed blacks and clipped whites.

Is there any way I can make that go away?

Barring that, can anybody tell me the magic formula that I can apply to my clips before exporting so that the exported clips look the same as they did beforehand? (e.g. make it so this affects the image as little as possible source->magicformula->implicitComputerRGBConversionInAVC->result)

I tried applying a computerRGB->studioRGB filter beforehand, and it looked almost, but not quite right (brightness/contrast levels looked right, but it warmed up my image a tiny bit, especially in the darker, more saturated reds). I’m sure the conversion is a simple formula that should be possible to exactly “pre undo” aside from the lossy resolution issues, but I can’t figure it out. It looks like it’s not a straight linear 16->235 to 0->255 mapping, or an adjustment of -.008 brightness and -15% contrast would work, but it doesn’t.

    Thanks.
