Studio Lighting – Sony EX3 XDCAM
Hello All
I need some advice on shooting with Sony EX3’s. I am shooting some indoor cycle training sessions next week in the UK using PAL. Think home Yoga video for cyclists! They will be shot in a large sound stage and I have been told that specialist studio lighting is needed when shooting in this format. Is that true? If LED lighting is used will that cause flicker due to the frequency that they oscillate at? Is their particular setting on the camera that will get around that? ANY and ALL advice about shooting with EX3’s under studio lighting will be greatly received.

I have used LED lights and have not noticed any flickering during shooting with my EX-3. I have also used mixed LED and incandecent without problems too. Just use enough light to light your subjects well and you should be fine. All my shots were under NTSC settings.

Thanks Ron. That gives me some hope that I don’t need to rent in some seriously expensive lighting equipment!
I found this on the internet earlier. It’s a section from the EX3 manual about flicker reduction. What settings would you say would be needed for mixed LED and incandecent lighting?
Recommended settings for flicker reduction
Frequency
Alway set “Frequency” to the power-supply
frequency value appropriate for the shooting area.
Mode
• It is recommended to set “Mode” to “Off” when
shooting outdoors or under lighting that does
not cause flicker. (It can be also “Auto,” but the
compensation may not be done properly.)
• It is recommended to set “Mode” to “Auto”
when shooting indoors or under various lighting
that may cause flicker, such as fluorescent,
sodium, or mercury-vapor lamps. (If
continuously shooting under lighting that may
cause flicker, “Mode” should be set to “On.”) -
I find I have to play with it every time, it’s usually trial and error.
I recommend getting a larger monitor too, I’ve been caught where it looks fine in the EX3’s display but back in editing not so much. I also notice that if LED lights are set closer to the brighter side of things the flicker tends to not be as noticeable. I’m not sure if you have to shoot electronics such as BlackBerry’s, computer screen or etc but same process there.
Usually I just pop the shutter into ECS mode and start rolling through the speeds until I find the minimum flicker.
Auto is okay, but it sometimes will stray on you. Example being I was shooting some b-roll near a window and panned slightly towards a desk – once I was near the desk you could see a slight flicker until the auto was able to compensate for the flicking of the Kino-Flos.
