  • Strange problem capturing DVCPRO HD

    Hi,

I am using FCP 5.1 and am trying to capture via firewire DVCPRO HD 1080/50i footage shot with the Panasonic HDX900. I am using the standard Easy Setup of DVCPRO HD 1080/50i found in FCP. The deck we are using is the 1400.

I had no problems caturing DVCPRO HD footage in this manner in the past 10 months, capturing the footage to a dedicated RAID.

However, after installing a Editshare shared-storage system linking our 3 FCP workstations, we encountered a strange problem when trying to capture the footage.

Normally, the resulting clips should be at 1440 x 1080 resolution. However, when we tried capturing, the footage that was captured turned out to be at a resolution of 960 x 540.

On a separate session, we got the same result again – 960 x 540.

On the third try, we switched to a different workstation, and even used a different deck. This time, the results came out slightly different – the resolution of the captured clips was now 1440 x 540 – still not correct!

The only time we managed to capture at 1440 x 1080 was when we attempted short clips of less than 1 minute.

Does anyone have any explanation as to this weird capture problem please? Or is there something that I have missed?

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    SK

if you capture to another hard drive (that isn’t the edit share) does it happen then?

Where are you seeing these results, in FCP or Quicktime?

    Hi,

I am able to see that the resolution has become smaller both in FCP (reflected in the clip information) and when I play the clip in Quicktime.

When I play the clip in Quicktime, the clip appears normal – just that it has a low resolution.

However, strangely, when I drop the clip into a FCP timeline (timeline is set to DVCPRO HD), the clip is not just smaller, but part of the image is also cropped off. (I checked the clip motion settings, but there is no crop activated.)

I tried capturing to another RAID drive (not the Editshare) and it appeared to worked fine.

So I am suspecting that the Editshare drive has something to do with the problem, but I just can’t figure why the resolution is being automatically reduced during capture, since the firewire capture should basically be a transfer of data off the tape.

    Regards,

    SK

I have no experience with Editshare, but it seems like you are experiencing problems because of it. Hopefully they have good support?

    Hi Jeremy,

I hope so too, although at the moment, the local reseller is also stumped as he has not ever encountered such a weird problem before.

    Thanks.
