  • Strange new problem in AE7 – masks

Posted by Kevin Watkins on May 3, 2006 at 8:06 pm

    Hi all,

I’m having a strange problem where the mask goes out of sync with the video when I render out files. Previously (different project) I managed to change the ‘write to’ disk and it seemed to work (read from external LaCie, write to Internal 2nd drive.). This time that’s not working. I can RAM preview the file and it’s perfect. Any thoughts?

I’m in AE7. The file is a 23.976 1920×1080 file. I’m on a G5 2.7GHz, 4GB ram. The intermediate codec is Microcosm. (And yes, they are Toggle Hold key frames for the mask.) In addition to 2 masks on the layer, I also have 3 paint effects, 1 curve and Brightness and Contrast…

I am rendering out as a ‘Trillions +’ alpha file.

    Thanks.
    Kevin Watkins.

That’s good to know, Dave, thanks.

Sadly I don’t have any time effects on the file.I’m going to try render out the entire comp (now just element as Alpha) and see what happens. I also tried a different codec, same problem though.

Maybe check that your footage is correctly intrpreted (it might be set to 24), just a thought

Weirdly enough, if I export using the export option (rather than the render settings) as a smaller 640×360 mpeg-4 file, it renders perfectly.

Anyone have any suggestions? Trying to output using export as a DVC Pro 1080i file…will post results..

The DVC Pro file exported perfectly from Export. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is? I have about 30 more shots to do and would love to avoid this issue in future…

    Thanks.

I have run into this problem – make sure “Preserve frame rate when nested or in Render Queue” is checked in the Comp’s Advanced Setting.

Not sure why this isn’t checked by default, but I’ve had problems rendering 23.976 sequences with masks on material that has pulldown – it’s as if the masks aren’t paying attention to the pulldown.

When you check that box- the problem goes away. Odd.

“it’s as if the masks aren’t paying attention to the pulldown.”

That’s exactly what it looks like. Sadly this did not work…I was so hoping it would. Since it works perfectly when I output via Export, I am assuming there is a render setting that is the problem.

Pete suggested the footage might not be interpreted correctly, problem is I created the footage, frame by frame and exported as 23.976…

    Any other thoughts?
