strange ghosting 59.940fps to 30fps
Posted by Luke Massoud on May 6, 2011 at 6:19 pmHi I have a video with some slowed down 59.940 footage , they are mov files. Im exporting to 30fps mp4 no interlacing .
Why do i get this strange ghosting not present in the original file or while viewing the preview before rendering within vegas ?
thanks !

Becasue unless you tell it not to, Vegas will blend the 59.94 frames down to 30. To tell it not to, you must right-click on each event and select Properties | Disable resample. Then it will stop blending the frames and just drop them instead.

May 7, 2011 at 1:56 amThank you so much John you really are a legend.
This has helped me out a lot.
I cant help but wonder why is the event default setting to re-sample ?
in what situation should it be on ?
also is there a way to set these events at once rather than one by one as there is like 50 and about 5 projects ?
Thanks John -

Because 99.9% of the time you want resample on. Going from 29.970 to 23.976 or 23.976 to 29.97 or 25.0. In all these cases you need to resample. It’s only when going from double the frame rate to half the frame rate that you don’t want it because it’s easier to just drop half of the frames instead of blending them.
Actually the default is NOT to resample. The default is “smart resample” which determine what to use. Perhaps Sony just needs to make it a little “smarter”. 😉

cool! One thing is confusing me the original frame rate is 59.940fps.
but Im slowing the events down in the timeline to some cases not exactly half its original speed. does this still apply ?“It’s only when going from double the frame rate to half the frame rate that you don’t want it ”
also im not exporting as 29.970, im exporting at 30..is this a mistake ?
and in answer to my question about setting all the events at once select them all then right click and choose “switches”

No, it no longer applies. If you disable resample, the video will look jumpy because it will only use existing frames which might not match the motion. I mean you can try it and see if you like the cadence but if it looks too jumpy, you’ll know why.
If you are slowing things down, then Vegas needs to synthesize new frames from where there are none. It does this by blending the two adjacent frames. If you don’t like the ghosting it produces, then you need to buy a more powerful plug-in like Boris BCC Optical Flow that comes with Boris Continuum Complete (BCC7) or Twixtor. The new frames have to come from somewhere.
[luke massoud] “also im not exporting as 29.970, im exporting at 30..is this a mistake ?”
Yes, it’s a mistake. People call 29.970 30fps because it is easier to say but the real frame rate for NTSC video should be 29.970.

when i say “not exactly half” I mean less, sometimes 70% of original speed , sometimes 55% …… so should re-sample be off ?Also I’m sorry about this but I’m still quite confused.
Just to clarify.
This project contains a mix of 29.970 and 59.940 clips, some of the 59.94 clips have been stretched in the time line up to but never more than twice the original duration. The final file will be viewed on the computer and the internet. What frame rate should I render as and could you please explain the reasoning behind choosing this frame rate so in future I can make this judgment myself ?
Normally I wouldn’t keep asking like this but the answers to this question will clear up a whole lot of confusion for me in future.

May 7, 2011 at 5:03 pmIf you turn off resample, Vegas will select a frame from the current frames. Since you recorded at 2x normal, you should try with resample off and see if you like the motion. It might be OK because there are plenty of frames to choose from.
As for what frame rate to render at: Most on-line video hosting sites (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) expect 29.97. If you send them 30fps, they may re-encode it to 29.97 and you might see ghosting again. I would stick with the templates that are built into Vegas. For example, the Internet 720-30p template correctly renders at 29.97 even though the names says 30p. Like I said, people use the term “30p” but they really mean 29.97.
