Strange DPX issue in AE CS5.5
Posted by Max Link on July 29, 2011 at 10:04 amHi everybody,
I’m currently testing CS5.5, trial downloaded directly from Adobe, on a Macbook Pro 6.1 running 10.6.8.
Here’s the thing: On trying to import DPX sequences (1280x720p25, 10bit lin), AE does… nothing. No error message, no crash, and definitely no clip appearing in the project window. QTs etc import normally.
The same DPX sequences import just fine in CS5 on another computer, same hardware, 10.6.7. Opening that project file in CS5.5 loads the clips, but shows all the media to be offline.
Since my purpose behind running the trial is essentially a performance comparison, I’d really like to get this to run. Any ideas on what might be the issue here? Thanks in advance,
Max

July 29, 2011 at 2:12 pmAre the DPX files stored locally on your computer, or are you trying to access them over a network? Might there be a permissions issue?

July 29, 2011 at 2:20 pmThe DPX files are locally stored, eSATA drive attached via Sonnet card. They open just fine in Frame Cycler on the same machine.

Puzzling. Can you import a single DPX into AE, or does that silently fail as well?

July 29, 2011 at 2:50 pmSame issue with single DPXes. AE imports any file type I’ve tried so far, save DPX. QTs in different codecs, TIFFs, JPEGs, … – All fine.
I’m beginning to think I might just have downloaded a partially corrupt installer package. Two reinstalls have not fixed the problem, but like I said, this is the trial version downloaded directly from Adobe.

July 29, 2011 at 3:05 pmCan you post a single DPX? I’ll try to import it on CS5.5 here.

This is one of the sequences’ slate frame. Opens fine in just about anything but AE – even Photoshop CS5.1 works fine with it!

July 29, 2011 at 3:34 pmI’m see the exact same behavior — importing this file fails silently on AE CS5.5 on a Mac. I can open in PS CS5.1, as well as AE CS3 and AE CS5.
I highly recommend that you submit a bug report [link]. If you like, feel free to mention this thread in your report. An engineer may wish to see one of these DPX files, too.

July 29, 2011 at 3:43 pmThanks Walter, I’ve submitted a report. Let’s see what they can dig up…
For the time being, I’ll just stick with CS5. 😉
Best,
Max

July 29, 2011 at 8:48 pmI’ll take a look at this, probably on Monday, but maybe over the weekend. When you submit the bug report, include a link to one of the problematic files.

July 31, 2011 at 1:05 amIs it an 8-bit dpx? Haven’t tried in 5.5 but in previous versions AE didn’t support 8-bit dpx. Only 10-bit.
