Strange Box Mask!
When I load up After Effects, and import some footage, the first time I use the selection tool it draws a box mask. It doesn’t recognise as a mask, and it’s really annoying. I have tried to right click it to delete it but I end up just right clicking the actual layer. It’s as if it’s not even there.

You are using the Region of Interest [link]. Click the icon to toggle it back off:
