  • Strange audio sync problems inducing slight panic!

I have some footage that was shot on P2 by the Panasonic HVX in 720 50p, I used 2 Senheisers one clip mic, one hand-held.

When I view the footage back via the camera everything’s fine and as I’d expect it.

My problem come’s when I log & transfer; the audio starts at the right place; as in when the subject says the first word it starts, however it quickly slides out of sync by about a second.

So I’ve tried pulling it back in sync but it won’t have it and here’s the weird thing, when I mark on the video a clap point it marks it where it should be on the audio. So example; I pull the video forwards 1 second, but when I mark where the clap point is on the video a mark appears 1 second back on the audio!

I’ve also checked the .movs FCP has made after logging & transferring and they are indeed out of sync, luckily I haven’t deleted the footage from my cards, but even after re-ingesting the original (synced) footage I’ve still got the same problems.

I’ve never had this before and I’m going quietly mad as this has turned a nice easy no stress job into a bit of a raspberry; any more questions I haven’t answered please ask and please, please help me!

I know I’ve seen this issue on these forums before. I think a solution was to change a preference in the L&T window to remove pulldown. That wouldn’t work for PAL, though.

Until someone more familiar with this setup responds, I’d definitely search the forums more to see if anything sounds familiar.

Alas no, there doesn’t seem to be any problem with the MXF data. It’s strange, in the P2 log and transfer window as on the camera, it’s perfectly in sync.

The sequence and clip settings match, yet the audio goes out of sync by 3 seconds 9 frames in the first 20 or so seconds. Adjusting the picture to sync at that point, puts it out of sync at other points.

I went through an airport scanner with the P2 cards, I’m wondering if it’s that? But then why would it play fine in the camera and on the P2 viewer.

My mild panic is rising as the mystery deepens. Maybe I should post on the P2 forum? Though it does seem an FCP problem.

Take the P2 Card and put it in the camera. See what the camera thinks is really recorded there. It almost sounds like there its shot in 60P not 50. or maybe your time line is set up for 60P and not 50P or some such combination.

    Hope that helps,

Yeah tried that, it’s definitely 50 as my camera can’t do 60, I’m at a total loss.

And they recorded on your camera? Okay, it has to be in your setup file some where. Trash your preferences and redefine, the project anew. It has to be somewhere in this set up that it is getting odd info.

    Hope this helps,

I’ve tried resetting the prefs and I’m now fairly sure it’s a card problem, because when I import a clip from the P2 viewer even when I’ve marked the whole clip, it still gives me a semi circle as if I’ve only imported some of it.

Do you think there’s a fix for it?
