Storage Solutions?
Hi,
We have a problem at work. We are a two man editing team, we shoot on two sony ex1’s in full HD, we are currently filling up about 1TB every few months and we are currently at 6TB of unique footage. Currently we have been buying GRAIDs (1TB) and then backing up on some cheap lacies but this is getting expensive and problematic as we have to double up on all the footage so as we can edit different programs from the footage at the same time.So, we are looking for a storage solution that we can both connect to and read from simultaneously – most of the writing will be elsewhere as we will render to our internal drives. The video is 35mb/s, so it would have to be fast enough to deal with two people reading the same file at this speed so as not to encounter any problems with unlimited RT in FCP.
We have looked at the Buffalo Terastation III 4TB but the drives are expensive to replace and 4TB is probably too small. There is also the Q-NAP Turbostation but we have been told that this wouldn’t be fast enough for HD video editing(? – perhaps someone can verify this).
So essentially, we need to come up with a system involving various pieces of hardware that allows us to come into the suite from the road, put our footage on something we can both access simultaneously and also back-up to something that we can take off site. Our budget is around $1500 and it needs to be somewhat futureproof.
Any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Give Maxx Digital (https://www.MaxxDigital.com) a call about Final Share. They hooked me up with 16TB of Shared storage. I have a 16 bay rack mounted RAID 6. I can replace the 1 TB drives with 2 TB drives and have 32 TB. It all works over Cat 6 ethernet at about 70 MB/s.

Thanks for your quick response, although it looks like quite an expensive solution, approximately $6000, we would be looking at around $1500. Have you or anyone else heard of anything slightly more budget, or know of a way to achieve the basic benefits of this type of solution for a smaller cost.Many thanks

The short of it, no. This is one of the cheapest solutions for shared storage. Above this is fiber channel– a lot more money.
I guess you can build a local raid on each of your systems and then file share files back and forth between edit sessions. But you could not edit the same media at the same time, so this is not really a shared storage solution, just a step up from sneaker net.

Yeah…I was about to say. What Warren suggested IS the budget version of a solid shared RAID with protection. This has never been that cheap, but this solution is pretty darn cheap compared to everything else.
Or you can always get a good EVOHD 2 and put that on one system, then share that with the other machine via GIG-E. Make one machine the server, and still work on it. Not as elegant, but might work.

I will make this simple. You can’t have shared storage in a professional video enviornment for $1500. And if someone knows how to do this for $1500, I will personally shoot them, so that you can’t do it (and the knowlege will die with them). Shared storage that works reliably is EXPENSIVE, and the Maxx Digital solution is the CHEAPEST ONE out there. The other solutions (like Terrablock, Editshare, XSAN, etc.) are REALLY expensive. So no, you are not getting what you want, and I don’t care how much research you do – it ain’t gonna happen (unless working at DV25 is good enough for you).Stop trying to ruin my career.
