I know this is Vegas forum, but I feel comfortable asking you guys about this.

My WD Premium Edition II external HHDD (1TB RAID = 2x 1TB) is dead. Windows can’t see it. When it was new I used to edit directly on it, and it used to work OK. With the time it became unstable for editting, but I thought the info was safe in there because of the RAID configuration. But today the HHDD is dead and my info is gone.

    – Does any body know about a reliable and not very expensive Data Recovery service?

    – Do you have suggestions about a reliable external RAID storage to backup the work?

I would contact Western Digital support. The whole purpose of a RAID 1 is that if one drive fails, you can recover from the other. The likelihood of both drives failing simultaneously is very small. That may mean that something else is wrong with the unit and your data is safe. Unless one drive failed a while ago and you didn’t realize it (which made it unstable) and now the other has gone?

Thank you John I will do that.

Can you tell what kind of storage are you using?

    I use a 4x2TB Raid 5 external backup.
It has it’s own card, power, and fan.
You can connect by USB 1-3 or SATA cable.
You can get it at newegg.com or do a search

[Frank Stevn] “Can you tell what kind of storage are you using?”

I currently have a 1TB RAID 0 for editing. Everything gets backed up to another non-RAID 1TB hard drive. I wanted the RAID 0 for speed. All of my other hard drives are non-RAID. I’m thinking of building a RAID 5 but haven’t yet. I only use enterprise class RAID certified drives in my RAID. Some people use desktop drives but I don’t like to tempt fate. 😉

[Roger Martin] “SANS DIGITAL TowerRAID TR4UTBPN 4 Bay USB 3.0 / eSATA Hardware RAID 5 Tower (Black)”

    How loud are the fans?

I have an AMS Venus T5 enclosure and I have to keep it powered down unless I’m using it because the fans (even on the low setting) sound like a hair dryer! I would never recommend this AMS unit to anyone because it’s so loud. This is not a desktop friendly unit.

So I’m looking for an enclosure that does RAID 5 quietly. 😉

My SAN Digital setup cannot be heard over the computer (internal noise) that sits next to it or the hard drive noise in the 4x IDE external above it.
I am running 4 Samsung 2TB SATA drives for a net 5.45TB (Raid 5) protected Storage Space.

Is this a hardware or software RAID issue? In either case, the data is not lost as it is ‘mirrored’ under RAID1. If you were using RAID0, you could say goodbye to your data.

You should be able to regenerate the array after replacing the faulty disk, or alternatively, use a utility such as Testdisk to access the remain good drive in its orphaned state.

The correct recovery procedure depends on the hardware and operating system you are using. Without this basic information, it is hard to provide any reliable advice beyond the generic.

Thanks for the info. That’s exactly what I want to do. Build a RAID 5 with 5x 2TB disks. Thanks!

    Thank you for all feedback.

It is a RAID1 array. The device is making more noise than usual and getting hot.

The PC has dual boot (Win 7 and Vista). Windows 7 doesn’t see the drive at all. SO It is hard to know what happened.

In Vista after restarting the PC and pressing the ON button several times on the device, it starts working for several hours. The RAID status displayed in the WD Raid Manager is “rebuilding” instead of “healthy”.

The disk array works for a few hours and then becomes not available again. Then I restart again and pray for it to become available again for a while.

Thanks God this way I have being able to copy to a different disk and recover around 60% of the data so far. The total is around 700 GB.

I hope to be able to recover all. If it doesn’t show up any more I don’t know how to proceed. I was taking a look to TestDisk, but I have no idea on how to use it if the array is not visible.

Now I must buy a new storage. I definitely won’t buy WD never again. I would like to buy a reliable RAID system. But there is a lot of information out there, so I don’t know yet what to buy. Maybe the SAN Digital setup with 4 Samsung 2TB SATA drives 5.45TB (Raid 5)is a good option.

So far, it’s been over a month and the 4 SamSung Raid 5 works a charm.
I am using a Phenom 4x on a AS Rock mobo and running Win7.

Last week my network of 4 computers got infected with Win32: Netsky-P (worm).
Fortunately, I thing I got rid of it with a root scan by AVAST (free version). Noton’s Semantic Suite let it right by and could not ID it.

Surprisingly, it got everywhere except my RAID drives.
