Storage help/suggestions
Hi folks,
For the last few years, I’ve been working off of several external LaCie drives. As they reach their limit in space, I find myself shuffling footage around and backing it up to other drives/my system disc. I’m starting to shoot more and more with the EX1, and so I believe a RAID is in order (if not overdue).
I’ve been looking at the CalDigit and Sonnet RAIDs, although for a RAID 5 setup (which I’d really like to go with), they are out of my budget. Have you any other suggestions for RAID 5’s that jive with FCP/Mac OS X, that don’t break the bank?
I have been eyeing one from OWC (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEQX2T4.0E/) but the lack of reviews by editors has me cautious.
I don’t foresee myself working with any/much uncompressed video, so I don’t believe that speed is my #1 concern.
Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I really like the HDElement from CalDigit. The price is low and the performance is great for just a four drive raid.

Sonnet is an excellent box.
We run all Maxx Digital arrays here. Two of their original EVO HD SAS/SATA units that are going on three years old now, still rock solid in RAID 5. Those are 8TB each.
We also have their new 16TB EVO unit as part of our Final Share SAN system that’s feeding up to 6 workstations simultaneously. Again, running RAID 5 since December / January of last year. Another solid performer.
Maxx Digital not only has their own products but they are a reseller of pretty much all the various brands of quality storage out there so my advice would be to contact them on Monday to discuss your needs. They’ll set you up with whatever solution fits both your needs and budget.
