Still unable to cleanly import FS-100 24p footage into FCP 5.1.2
Posted by Chris Elley on September 28, 2006 at 8:00 pmI updated my FCP to 5.1.2 in hopes it would address a specific import issue:
-Footage from an FS-100 on an HVX200 shot at 720/24P does not import at 23.98 fps. Instead, it shows up as 59.94 and does not work well in a 24p sequence.
I do have “remove advanced pulldown / duplicate frames” activated in the new preferences dialog of the P2 import dialog. Can anyone offer any ideas? I’m nearing the end of my rope with anything originating on the Firestore FS-100.
Thanks!

September 28, 2006 at 9:21 pmI haven’t tried 720p. but 1080 advanced pulldown removal definitely works. Are you sure your camera was set at 720p24? Does the Frame Rate Converter work on the footage?

September 28, 2006 at 9:35 pmThe camera was set to 720p24. The frame rate converter does not work on the footage if I select “remove duplicate frames.” It just freezes the converter. However, if “remove duplicate frames” is not checked, it processes the footage… just resulting in a super slow motion clip that must be sped up 250% (and no connected audio).
Thanks

September 28, 2006 at 9:38 pmI just tried a 720p clip (shot on P2 not on firestore) and everything works perfectly. I shot 720p24 over 60, removed the frames on import and it played in normal speed in a 24p timeline with audio. I’d imagine you have some settings goofed up somewhere.

September 28, 2006 at 9:40 pmWe also shoot with P2 cards as well. We never have any trouble with them whatsoever (for 9 months running). We only have trouble with the Firestore footage.
Thanks

September 29, 2006 at 1:08 amThat’s a bummer. I’m sorry. Have you tried the firestore forum?

September 29, 2006 at 2:50 amYou must uncheck remove duplicate frames for the FRC to work. So, import those clips shot VFR with remove duplicate frames unchecked (and in FCP 5.1.2 that option is buried in Preferences, which you open with Ctrl-Click or pulldown menu in the P2 l&c window).

September 29, 2006 at 1:38 pmThank you for the suggestion. I have tried it, unfortunately without differing results.
If this is not going to happen inside FCP, can anyone think of an efficient way to convert a lot of FS-100 59.94 footage to 23.98, knowing that the camera was set to 720 24p when it was shot?
I have tried the DVCPROHD frame rate conveter. It doesn’t work with “remove duplicate frames” checked either. It also only addresses one clip at a time and divorces the audio and timecode.
I’m definitely up for more FCP suggestions, but outside of that I’m open for other possibilities to get the footage converted (without having to spend even more money).
Thanks for all of your help.

September 30, 2006 at 2:37 amDoes your Firestore have the latest firmware update?

September 30, 2006 at 7:24 pmAlso make sure you select the panasonic HD varicam 23.98 easy set-up and check remove duplicate frames on import. This has worked for me for 6 months now without fail!

September 30, 2006 at 8:44 pmOur Firestore does have the latest firmware update, however the footage we’re discussing was shot with the first of the two 2.0.0 upgrades. Why they didn’t name them 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 doesn’t make much sense.
We’re using the DVCPRO HD 24p easy setup. We have selected remove duplicate frames.
At this point, we’re fairly convinced that this footage is not going to import at the correct frame rate. We’re now just looking for ways to convert without spending additional money.
In our experience, the Firestore FS-100 units are not consistent from unit to unit. We own two and they tend to perform differently with the exact same settings. We’ve also had a series of other problems with one or both units, the most notable of which is corrupted files. That said, the P2 cards have been very solid.
