October 23, 2010 at 10:27 amI edit video since 1983, and I consider my self mostly as a technician.
If the video editors of the world would live because their creativity, 99 % would starve.
Video editors do not tell stories; normally we helps others to tell their stories, and we take care of all the technical aspects. Of course I try to add my “creativity” to make the best of what I edit, but normally I’m not hired because that.
We edit Video, and video is an electric signal. You may be a very creative video editor, but if you are not able to cope with all the technical issues, you need a video editor beside you, so you are half video editor.
I only edit freely, when I edit my own stuff.

October 23, 2010 at 12:01 pm[Alex Elkins] ” If Avid/Prem/Vegas etc are improving and FCP isn’t then we all have to take a look at the tools we use and say “should I invest money and time on an alternative/addition?””
FCP is improving, has been since version 1.2.5. If it wasn’t then I wouldn’t have been using it since 2001 and keep using it.
[Alex Elkins] “I love FCP as many others do, but if we have to move on then that’s fine too. People just want to make educated decisions about the path they take because not every company or individual has the infrastructure to change at the drop of a hat and maintain productivity.”
Of course you have the infrastructure to change at the drop of a hat and maintain productivity. Everyone who has an FCP system has that ability. That’s the beauty of FCP’s architecture, it’s all plug and play. Want to use Premiere? Same hard drives, same video cards, same graphics cards all play with Premiere. Switch over in a single day and you’re off and running.
If you want to move on, then move on.
