I’m keyframing motion with high res still images in an HDV sequence.
As the pictures move many of them are behaving as if they’re experienceing friction while being dragged over something. There are these little stutters in playback. On clips where the behavior shows up in the real-time preview it still does it, even when rendering.

The images are high res (3000 x 2xxx or so on average at 300 dpi), and are on a LaCie 500GB FW 800 disk.

When I modify the keyframes the stutters will happen at different places, or more or less severely, but I can’t get rid of them consistantly.

I’m going crazy trying to do this, and I’m not getting anywhere.

    Thanks in advance,
    Zak

Your images are too large and FCP is likely not behaving well because of that. At that frame size they should be at 72 DPI precisely. At 300 DPI you are merely increasing the pixel dimensions since that all that that’s all additional DPI does past the target resolution. Resize your image to be 3K x 2K at 72 DPI in Photoshop.

Make sure that you are also rendering the piece fully and are evaluating the rendered motion control move on a pro video monitor. You can never judge rendered graphics on the Canvas.

    Thanks Kevin,
I’d figured it had something to do with my image files, but had no real idea what to do about it. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it a lot… this drove me nuts all of Friday.
    Thanks again,
    Zak

So I gave Kevin’s suggestion a shot this morning, and the images still stuttered. I was really hoping that would take care of it… it made a lot of sense.
While I’m plugging away clip by clip adjusting keyframes to work around this for now, does anyone else have any experience with issues like this (still image keyframe problems in HDV / HD), and what was the outcome of your situation.
Beyond wanting the job done, I’m also just curious now about what is happening in my timeline. I would really like to walk away from this with a confidence that I can get pictures to do what I want in FCP at any resolution.

    Thanks Again
    Zak

Are you editing at 24p? if not, try adding a slight blur to your picture as movement on stills can get a little stuttery in FCP. Your best alternaitve is using Motion or After Effects for such movements to smooth them out.
