Still Image optimum resolution 1080i
Hi,
Apologies in advance if this is is an old question. I’ve had a search but haven’t found exactly what I’m after.
I’m shooting my first project in 16:9, 1080i hdv, using Premiere Pro CS3 for the edit. I need to ask for some still images to drop in and have been asked to specify exactly what size & resolution of image I need. The images are all (I think) currently A4 portrait size that I can re-size in photoshop, but just need to know what I should be asking for in a way that will make it sound like I know what I’m talking about.

First, (and I know I harp on this a lot): Ignore DPI. Tell the print people to ignore DPI. It’s meaningless for video. You need to be concerned with actual _pixel_ dimensions.
That being said, consider how much leeway you need for zooming or panning on the stills, and specify a size that will give you 1920 pixels wide at the maximum push-in. So, if you want to zoom in 200%, start with an image that is 3840 pixels wide (and at least 2160 high). You have a bit of leeway; probably a bit more if you use AfterEffects or other compositing program to do the moves. I’ve found 10%-15% enlargement is OK. Beyond that, the image gets noticeably soft. Your mileage may vary…
This is all with square pixels, BTW. Much easier to deal with.hope it helps,

Amen!…and the web also. I read many knowledgeable folks who mention DPI for video and web. There are no inches on a TV or monitor.

Ditto on DPI, but as far as the still image, if you do NOT plan on doing zoom/pans on the stills, just make them 1920×1080 with square pixels.
HDV cheats by using a 1.333 pixel aspect ratio to get down to 1440 x 1080 and still offer 1920 x 1080 playback because 1440 x 1.333 = 1920, but for stills just use the full 1920 x 1080 and Premiere will interpret correctly in an HDV project.
This goes the same for Adobe Encore DVD menu backgrounds for a 1440 x 1080 project, they must be 1920 x 1080 (.psd format for Encore).
