still can’t figure out XDCAM EX audio import
Posted by Dave Fleming on April 24, 2012 at 1:18 pmHi All,
I’m essentially re-posting a question from last week because I KNOW someone else has encountered this and has the answer…Here’s the simple problem:
I’m shooting footage on a Sony PMW320 that records 4 mono channels of audio. When I transfer the BPAV folder to my local RAID drive and use Media Browser and import from there, my audio comes into PPro as “48000 Hz – Compressed – 1 Mono” into 1 channel. When I browse directly to my SxS card reader and import from there (which I wouldn’t do practically), I get “48000 Hz – 16-bit – 4 Mono” into all 4 channels.
Why is just copying and pasting the BPAV folder to my RAID drive causing the audio to do this? Please help!

Have you found a solution? We’re encountering the same problem.

May 16, 2012 at 8:55 pmHi Richard,
Yes, sort of. Basically, my solution is just to use Sony’s XDCAM Browser for any and all file transfers. When using it, all four mono channels come across using Adobe’s Media Browser. It’s an extra step, admittedly, but it works.
So, the workflow is: Move footage from card to hard drive using Sony XDCAM Browser. Import footage from hard drive location using Media Browser. That should give you all four channels.

June 1, 2012 at 4:39 pmI experienced the same problem. Used the Sony Clip Browser and 4 channels of audio restored. But still wanted to know what caused the problem.
Ran across this in the installation manual for the new version of the Sony Clip Browser.
Information recorded for materials stored on an SxS
memory card may span multiple files and folders.
XDCAM Browser allows you to handle this information
and file directories easily, without worrying about
structure. However, if you use Windows Explorer to
perform operations such as copying clips from the SxS
memory card, the information stored with the clip may not
be retained. To prevent such occurrences, we recommend
performing file operations using supported applications. -

June 2, 2012 at 12:33 pmThanks for your post, David. I’ll tell you one more major problem with this scenario: On some days, I’m out shooting several clients back-to-back, so I end up with multiple projects on the same SxS card. Well, one of the client’s footage was being edited out of state, so I had to send the post house a copy of the footage. Obviously, it makes no sense for me to send the entire BPAV folder to the post house, as there were two other projects on it.
So, I use XDCAM Browser to just pull the clips I need for this client to my RAID drive and then burn a DVD of that for the client. SAME PROBLEM–post house calls in a panic, wondering why the clips in the BPAV folder I sent him only have one channel of audio! My workaround was to import all the clips from the shoot into my PPro, export audio only, and email the guy an .AAC file that he could then link up to the footage I sent! What a nightmare!
I firmly believe this is a SONY problem and either I’m missing something very basic or they need to address it.

June 4, 2012 at 1:50 pmI’m on Win 7 same as you. Do you think that has something to do with it?
I sent your post about the SxS cards not retaining info when using windows explorer to my IT guy and he’s in a total conundrum over it. I mean, this same problem (losing audio information) would apply to archiving the media as well, wouldn’t it?

June 4, 2012 at 3:32 pmThe Windows Explorer thing makes me think so….but
Get this: I shot a cooking demo three weeks ago and imported the footage from an SxS card onto my G-Raid array by copy/paste. I made a PrePro project, imported a clip and the 4 audio tracks were present. All good.
Three days ago, I had a different project open and wanted to use a shot from the cooking demo for b-roll.
When I imported it, only 1 track of audio. So, the clips had already been imported and were good. What changed it?
PrePro?I’m stymied.
Have you sent Adobe a mssg about it?

June 4, 2012 at 10:23 pmNo, I haven’t sent Adobe any messages about it…BUT, I’m getting ready to do one better: I’m attending the CS6 training in NYC tomorrow and there should be no shortage of Adobe folks there to ask!
We’ll get to the bottom of it one way or another!
