Stereography Monitoring using Kona 3?
Posted by Tim Maloney on May 19, 2010 at 10:38 pmHi All,
Got a Kona 3 and a TV Logic with the two input spigots for 444 monitoring ( which I’ve never used !!)
Is there a device that would sit between the Kona and the TV Logic that would enable the display of stereo3D images??
I’ve heard about such a device but cant find it!!!!
Likely workflow is using the upcoming Panasonic S3D cameras

May 20, 2010 at 1:00 amKona 3 will support left channel on HD Out 1 and right channel on HD out 2. You don’t have to buy anything. Free upgrade. Will the TV Logic do it – probably not.

Nothing. The Kona 3 will send L out one SDI port and right out another SDI port. What you need is a monitor that is 3D capable. One that will accept the L and the R and mix them properly. At NAB, they had the SDI outs going to Hi-5 adapters, converting that to HDMI, and then they connected that to an HDTV that is 3D capable. Two HDMI inputs.
THAT is what you need.

As I said I get the Kona 3/ Monitor set up – thank you.
I’ll have from the Panasonic camera, two cards with the L R captured to each.
So I open log and transfer in FCP and I ……………. ?
Can you please fill in the workflow, Do I need to buy any thing other than the screen??

May 20, 2010 at 10:32 pmLook up CINEFORM… that’s what you’ll need to conform to. THEIR workflow. It’s so new, I don’t know it.

there are a whole lotta steps before you get to FCP.
NO you do not use L&T in the Cineform workflow- you will need to handle the content as R & L files- convert them to the Cineform codec and then mux the stereo files inside of Cineform before handing them off to FCP.
You will also need to align the R&L in a frame accurate fashion prior to muxing the images.
you may need to change one of the camera orientations when using an over / under rig.please remember that left eye is dominant in 3D…
Not to mention you really do need a stereo capable display to view and edit the content correctly.

May 21, 2010 at 8:56 pmYou do not even need a Kona 3. All you need is a card with an HDMI or HDSDI output. Cineform muxes the eyes into a side-by-side image. As far as the card is concerned, it’s just another HD signal.
It’s the TV that “demuxes” the side by side image and produces a 3d image.
You do need the Kona 3 with some projection systems that require 2 separate streams.
And a warning: Cineform is $3k. There’s also “Stereo 3d Toolbox” that’s a plugin for FCP. It’s less expensive, but requires just about every shot to be rendered. And we all know how good FCP is about keeping track of renders.
