    Hi guys,

I’m setting my soon to be mother-in-law (in Hawaii) up with her first mac – a ’13 macbook.

We’re fedexing her an airport extreme w/ her macbook, both of which will be configured to run before she plugs them in.

    I have two questions:

The first: What’s the best, affordable / simple / effective way for me to set up remote access program so that I can control and view her desktop from Los Angeles? I don’t need any crazy $300 10 client thing from apple, but I”m curious which option is best for simple, occasional support should she need it? I can configure her extreme and macbook before I ship, so that won’t be an issue.

The second question: Her macbook is the white core duo and I’d really like to protect her laptop 100% with a nice shell, wristguards, mousepad guard, etc. Any recommendations?

Thanks for any help or advice you have in advance.
    John

I suggest just waiting for Leopard.

Ok, so you’ll have to do without this feature ’till October, and even then you’ll have to upgrade both computers. But you’ll get this built in:

Watch that video to the end. That looks perfect to me. All you have to do is get through the summer without it!

I think you might be right. I tried setting up a VNC and while I can get it to work inside my LAN, connecting through the internet with SSH is so far impossible. All our routers are configured, all the ports are open, and I can even connect via terminal/ssh, however when Chicken of the VNC tries to connect, I time out or get some weird “Bind: The address is already in use” terminal message.

Probably my last option is to get one of those ichat plugins that allow the screen to output via ichat video instead of the camera. At least I can backseat drive that way while she uses the mouse.

    Thanks for the feedback Jeff.

I ended up getting a second extreme and running it via ethernet to the G5. Voila, I now have n wireless speed on a g5.

The express runs via ethernet out of the main extreme,so I have two networks now. One is 5ghz n, and the other is g.

    Everybody’s happy!
