    Hi,

I am looking for the best way to proceed with this workflow issue.
I have footage shot on XDcam EX at 23.98. The show will contain mostly this shot footage with some archival SD footage mixed in. The delivery format is HDCam 1080i 29.97 drop frame.

At first I set up my sequence to cut native at 23.98 and used the Kona LHe to add pulldown and output to 29.97. However we did not deal with the archival footage yet. Converting this SD footage to 23.98 and then adding pulldown back in doesn’t seem like the bets way to go. Also, would I be able to output to dropframe like this?

The other alternative as I see it would be to drop the 23.98 footage into a 1080i 29.97 timeline. This would be able to handle the SD footage, but what I have been reading on the forums is that FCP will not add the correct pulldown to the 23.98 footage in the 1080i 29.97 sequence.

Do I have this characterized correctly? Suggestions?

    Thanks.

You have to capture your SD footage with an AJA Kona 3 or Kona LHi (the LHe cannot do this) or Matrox MXO2…upconverting from SD to HD first…to match your sequence. Then you need to use Compressor to remove the frames to get to 23.98.

    Tutorial here:

But then you will be adding frames BACK to the footage to get it back to 29.97. Which won’t look too bad, but begs the question, why didn’t you just shoot 29.97 if you knew you were delivering a 29.97 master? That would have made life MUCH easier.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the link.

The footage was shot with the EX3, file based XDCam EX, and they chose 24P.
I had no say in the matter. Of course staying with the same frame rate makes life easier for everyone.

    Thanks again.
