Sports Editing in the Olympics – good and bad.
With the Olympics, the worlds best players can show off their chops.
Not just in sports but in visual editing as well.
It’s certainly pretty easy to find examples of excellence in coverage from both the US games contractor NBC – and from the host UK stalwart BBC.
But two threads have gained some traction lately on social media.
In one, NBC has been roundly taken to task for the “soft core porny” video they allowed to escape to air called Boides in Motion. In my opinion it does NOT reflect the overall high standards NBC exhibits elsewhere in their coverage. But they showed it – so it’s fair game for critique.
Also trending on social is an impressive mini-doc that the BBC ran called Nature vs. Nurture. Which not only tackles a very touchy subject, but weaves historical and contemporary footage into a pretty compelling narrated story with some pretty excellent editing, IMO.
Again, I want to caution that this is not about NBC being “worse” than the BBC. I could have picked different examples of excellent NBC editing – but the difference in pure editing craftsmanship between these two pieces is pretty stark.
FWIW.
