So I came across an awesome art video and it seems like it’s using videos files with soft masks in some sort of a fractal spiral. I’m wondering if this can be done with an expression. Heres the site:

Go into the art samples page and scroll down to the video called “God’s Eye.” If you’re bored or looking for some creative ideas, there is some really interesting stuff on that site.

To me that looks like it’s done via a particle generator. There are Particular Folks here who might chime in, but I’d go ask over at the AE Particle Illusion Forum, (click on Change Forum, left side), methinks they’d tell you if it can be done with PI (I’d be surprised if it couldn’t be) if you posted your example there.

If you mean the God’s Eye animation, then it looks like it is simply multiple clones of the same footage layer statically arranged in a spiral pattern and then this pattern is rotated in its entirety. All other motion comes from the footage itself (which is some splashing water).

yeah, i guess i might just have to position my footage by hand and try to make a spiral.

You could do that or use Trapcode’s Echospace. This would allow you to aniamte all the parameters and give you a wide variety of those kaleidoscopic effects.
