Spinning wheel while playing XDCAM footage
I have a small project with about 50GB of Sony XDCAM footage. Most of the interview clips are 10 minutes or so. The shorter B-roll ones were playing fine but now I’m on my first 10 minute clip and every time I play it the lovely spinning wheel comes up and the clip won’t play until I stop and start it. It plays for a few seconds then stops again. The b-roll had audio on it, so I don’t think it’s an issue of audio tracks. I’ve tried trashing prefs, restarting and made sure auto-save is every 30 min. I’ve tried not having any other programs running in the background to avoid switching between programs. The footage is on an external Lacie rugged 500GB drive of which there’s still about 170GB of free space. I’m using firewire 800 to connect. I installed Lion on my MacPro just last week and have already run into compatibility issues with my Adobe CS3. Could this be another compatibility issue with FCP 7 & Lion? Has anyone experienced this or could there be something else I’m not doing properly? I’m only viewing and logging right now. Any help is appreciated!

Scratch that. Looks like an issue with the codec or something although I do have the Sony xdcam codec in my system. Having the same issue watching the footage in QT, FCP or MPEG Streamclip. Maybe I need to convert it? I’m never gonna get my logging done at this rate!

Chances are you would have better performance transcoding to ProRes422, but that said I think the bigger issue here is based on what you’ve posted you have 2gb of system memory on a Lion tower? Go to the Apple on the top left and select “About this Mac.” Do you have 2gb of system memory or more?
Other questions that come to mind are what kind of XDCAM footage are you working with? There are many variants. Select a problematic clip on your timeline and hit butterfly-9. What compressor, frame rate, and frame size are you working with?
Does your sequence match the media? Select the Timeline window and hit butterfly-0 for your sequence settings. Again, compressor, frame rate, and frame size please?

I think I’ve already determined that I need more memory as the Apple sys req for FCP recommends 4GB. Am shopping for that now to upgrade from my 2GB (2 x 1GB) to add an additional 4GB (2 x 2GB). Hoping that’s all this is. Never had a problem before with HD video.
Currently I have no sequence since I am just logging the clips now. The source media is from a Sony camera….XDCAM EX 1080i60. 29.97 1920×1080. Oddly most of the clips play fine but it hangs on the longer clips.

Converting to pro res 422 made no difference.
