Basically I want to make a Spinning Top come from the Top of the screen, fall into place, and then spin off to the right or left. The movement part will not be a problem. The illusion that it is actually spinning will be.

Without taking the time to animate this in after FX or Flash, my thought is to create the top in photoshop. I would create two separate Tops, each with a slightly different design in the middle so that it seems to have spun (everything else will remain the same). Then in FCP I will alternate the two images to give it the illusion that it is spinning/

Does anyone have any other thoughts for creating this illusion quickly or to enhance it?

I’d try building your top in a separate sequence then nest that sequence and apply motion blur. give yourself some extra room on the head side. It takes FCP motion blur a few frames to get up to speed so to speak.
