Speed problem when converting from Prores 422 to DVPAL
Hi guys!
I am having a bit of a problem here. I have just finished 15sec commercial, shoot on EOS 5D. Initially I converted the raw footage to Apple Prores 422 LT and edited in FCP 3 in the same format. However, this commercial needs to go to a TV as a DV PAL 25fps (!!!).
So, I converted it via Compressor and JES Deinterlacer to see how it would look. It looks good but there is a big problem; On a few clips I applied variable speed change. On a converted material that speed change jumps a frame or two at point where speed change starts and finishes and normal speed resumes.
Is there a way to resolve this problem? It is pretty urgent!Thanks!

What have you used the JES Deinterlacer for?
Your footage is Progressive.

I used it because I wated to check all of the options (I need DV PAL interlaced as a broadcast master) to see how it would look since I never did it that way! In the meantime I switched variable speed to non variable and it doesn’t happen! Does that mean that one cannot export HD footage with variable speed clips to a DV PAL 25fps (or even other formats) without having skipping at he beginning and at the end of the certain clip (when speed change stops)??? -

There is nothing to de-interlace.
The only thing is that Progressive stuff must be read in an interlaced fashion.
Just need to drop your Progressive footage in an Interlaced sequence.

We could talk long about the problems of shooting a h264 1080p30 to end up in a DV PAL.
Difficult to know from here what cause the issue.
Possible solution, if there are no many clips with speed change, you can Conform your p30 Proress footage to p25 and change the clips in the time-line. You will need to fake the normal speed too.
The clips play slower (25 vs 30fps).
WARNING!!: YOU NEED TO COPY THE CLIPS TO CONFORM.
CONFORM CHANGE THE MOVIE PROPERTIES AND WILL AFFECT TO THAT CLIPS IN ALL HIS INSTANCES;
FOR EXAMPLE WOULD MAKE A BIG MESS IN ANY FC PROJECT USING THAT CLIP.

Well, it would have made a lot more sense, and given you a lot more quality if you’d shot in PAL. the EOS 5D only shoots in on frame rate, and that frame rate does not conform to to any video standard in the world.
Try taking your spot to a post house with either a Teranex or Alchemist. Those boxes may be able to give you an acceptable conversion.

You know, I looked at that page, & it didn’t really tell me anything. I’d try using Compressor, first. We’ve gotten some really great results. When Compressor can’t deliver, we send it out for Teranex or Alchemist.
