Spec For ITunes and Amazon Distribution – Uncompressed File
Hi Everyone:
It’s been a while. I am hoping that this post finds you all well.
I am preparing my film for self distribution and the aggregators for ITunes and Amazon are asking for certain submission specifications. Since I’m working in a Windows program, I can’t deliver Prores, which is what they prefer. The alternatve is 8 or 10 bit uncompressed. Just in case you’re looking to self-distribute. Here’s what they are asking for.
The dilemma I’m facing is that I cannot find where I can render an uncompressed .mov file in HD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,

Since Avid DNxHD is one of the supported formats why not use that? I have a tutorial on my web site on how to create the Vegas Pro template for it:

Would you know what Audio Codec: LPCM (Little or Big Endian)is? It is something I can select in Vegas? I can’t seem to find it.
Also I noticed in the configuration of the Avid DNxHD, there is a selection for either uncompressed and compressed. Based on the specs I’ve shared should I select uncompressed. The specs list 10 bit and 8 bit uncompressed separate from Avid DNxHD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LPCM is Linear Pulse Code Modulation and refers to how audio is encoded in the absence of a codec which is otherwise referred to as Uncompressed audio or PCM audio. Little Endian vs Big Endian has to do with how the bytes are arranged in a word. Little Endian stores the Least Significant Bits (LSB) first while Big Endian stores the Most Significant Bits (MSB) first. This has more to do with computer architecture than anything else. All Intel systems are LSB (Little Endian).

No. Uncompressed means are aren’t using any codec at all. So “DNxHD uncompressed” is an oxymoron. It can’t exist. Codecs compress. That’s what they do. if you have Uncompressed then you are not using a codec. If you are using a codec then you are compressing.
You will not be able to render an Uncompressed QuickTime file with Vegas Pro. It may work for small files but any appreciable size file will seem to work and then it will fail. I’ve tried this may times on different computers and it always fails. I think it has to do with the fact that QuickTime is 32-bits on Windows and it runs out of memory. This is why I recommended using Avid DNxHD. It’s a great digital intermediary codec. Just set up the template the way I describe on my web site and send them sample file and see if they are OK with it.

Hi John:
My film is 1 hour and 42 minutes. My dilemma is that Sony will only allow me to render on my hard drive. When I choose to render directly to DVD I can render on an external drive. My hard drive only has approx. 75 GB available and when I render to Avid DNxHD I keep getting an error message stating that I may not have enough memory. I am thinking about reinstalling Sony on an external so that I can render on the external. Is this possible? I know that Cubase does not allow installation on externals.

That doesn’t sound right. I use an external USB 3.0 drive for all of my projects. When you call up the Render As dialog it should allow you to select any drive you want.

For the length of using Sony, I’ve never been able to render to an external. No other selections. Is your installation on your C drive?

Yes, Vegas Pro is installed on my C: drive and I have never rendered anything to my C drive. This makes no sense. When you open the Render As dialog you press the Browse button and you are taking to a Windows dialog where you can select any drive on your system. There is no way that Vegas can restrict this.
What steps are you actually taking when you render?
