  • Source size grows 1400 % when Rendered to DVD format

A size increase of one thousand four hundred Percent seems a bit off the wall but maybe its just that the source *.mov format is vastly superior in terms of compression compared to mpeg2 and *.ac3.

    Details:

I have a series of 17 *.mov formatted files they are:
    Video: Sorensen video 3, 880×660
Audio: mpeg layer 3, mono 44.100kHz

A 5 minute 1/2 second clip weighs in at 10.25mb

They are variable lengths and sizes but all together they weigh in at 150 MB (158325394 bytes)

The only editing I’ve done is add markers for chapter points between them.

When rendered out in mpg and ac3 the resulting 2 files show close to 2.1 GB (2365024768 bytes)

Dividing the big by the little shows app. 14 times. That is, the original size goes into the final resulting size 14 times, making the rendered size some 1400% larger.

I’m too inexperienced to know if this is normal but I thought mpg and ac3 were fairly highly compressed formats.

Is sorensen 3 and mp3 that much more lossy or are they just that much better tools?

    Hi,

Based on the filesize, I’m really sure you rendered as uncompressed avi.
I bet it’s not an mpeg!

What template did you use, which steps did you make to render?
