this is about as basic as it gets – recently i installed AE CS4 – am proficient at both Premiere and PS – sounds lame, but i can’t get any audio for my files imported into AE – the audio is in the file, but i can’t enable the audio for some reason – help! tried all the basics – is there something i need to do. no problem with Premiere in regard to sound. i’m puzzled.

AE doesn’t play audio like Premiere does. As soon as you press “play” in AE, all you can see is video. In order to hear audio you need to go to Composition>Preview>RAM preview.

From there, AE will render your timeline and play it back, sound intact. However, once you mess with things in the composition again, the RAM preview goes away and you won’t be able to hear anything anymore. To my knowledge there is no way to enable audio playback every time you press play.

    Does this help?

Instructions for previewing audio are in the “Preview video and audio” section of After Effects Help.

As Bryant indicated, RAM previews are one way of playing audio. Spacebar play is not.
