  • Sound is coming out of left speaker and right speaker alternately.

    Hi,
The sound was recorded using the zoom h4n and a lav and it is one actress speaking. Putting the audio files on the timeline, it looks like stereo, but only one track has sound. Also, some takes have the actress’s audio on the top track and some on the second track. And so on playback, her voice comes out of the left and right speakers alternating.

Is there a way in FCP to have the audio of the actress coming out of BOTH speakers. AT the very least I need to find a way to have it coming out of the same speaker uniformly. Thanks for any help!

Pan the 2 tracks in FCP to the center. They are not stereo tracks. It appears at times the mic was plugged into channel 1 on the recorder and other times channel two.

Hi, Thanks that totally worked. Now, should the voice always come out of both speakers? I read somewhere that my left and right speakers should be reserved for effects and music. Is there a template or recognized way of doing sound for this?

    Thanks again, Monty

Unless you’re doing surround sound (which is really mixed in STP), then I’d suggest for a given scene:
    Leave music in stereo.
If any ambient added sound is stereo, leave it stereo.
If any spotted SFX comes from a specific spot on screen, then adjust accordingly screen L or R (partially)
I usually have talent ‘heavy’ in a speaker, depending on screen directly (but far, far from full. Just nudged.)
