  sound balance changing “by itself”

  I’ve noticed that the balance slider in athe Sound system preference (I’m running 10.4.8, but it probably happened in earlier releases) has changed slightly one way or the other, seemingly “by iteself”?
  Any ideas what could cause this? Thanks in Advance.
