I remember the heyday of compression when there was Media Cleaner (later Discreet and Autodesk) and others rose to the challenge like Popwire Compression Master (became Telestream Episode). Sorenson had a long run but it looks like the days professional free standing compressors are winding down. Freebee MPEG Streamclip remains frozen in time. There’s still Handbrake and its FFMPEG underbelly.Left free standing is Adobe Media Encoder as part of Creative Cloud and Apple’s Compressor.
Maybe there’s a few obscure ones still holding out. -

Adobe Media Encoder has definitely sucked a lot of air out of the room and I suspect that it is the largest reason, by far, that the landscape is changing so markedly, Craig. It’s hard to build a profitable enterprise when there’s a workflow hand-off like that in Adobe Media Encoder.
When I got my email from Sorenson saying that my copy of Squeeze had been squeezed into lifelessness, I was definitely sad. It has been a useful tool for many years, now I’ll have to force myself to like AME.

I am not happy with the current situation with desktop encoders. Telestream Episode checked off all the boxes after we left Autodesk Cleaner To this day, AME does not have the workflow tools Episode had. I had a folder in Episode that told Episode to to multiple encodes and delete the source file. Or move the source file to another archive machine.
Adobe Media Encoder does have watch folders, but not nearly the complexity of Episode.
We are still using Episode I guess until the OS doesn’t support it, or newer codecs come on scene it cannot support.
One would think there is a niche market here that is not being served now.

AME doesn’t need to replace functionality to displace the competition; it merely has to make it untenable for others to continue to pour money into serving the customers they have. Episode was a monster but sadly, even monsters are killed by fretful villagers with pitchforks. Changing markets suck, I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

Both Squeeze and Episode offered options that neither AME or Compressor have. Those were less frequently used though.
You can see one example in the forum where someone needs to create MPEG2 I Frame and has Compressor. Compressor can’t do it. Episode and, I believe, Squeeze could. For the masses it’s a less common delivery format. Of course Compressor can deliver MPEG2 TS (like Episode) and that’s common amongst some broadcasters (certainly for TV Spots) but that’s not what he needs.
As a result, some users’ needs are now lost between the cracks on the feature gap between Compressor and AME and the more extensive (but often less widely used) features of Squeeze and Episode.
