I recently got Sony Vegas 10.0 FINALLY. I was having trouble getting it to run correctly on my computer so now that it finally runs, I am MORE than a little frustrated that every single video clip i’ve tried to import just bring this up:

“Warning: An error occurred while opening one of more files.

An error occurred while opening a codec.

    >File C:\Users\SEI Aarons\Pictures\Summer 2010\JEWLZ AND ME NC\IMAG0042.AVI could not be opened.”

all I’m trying to do is open .avi files from my HD camcorder. This is a “professional” program, this shouldn’t be a problem. Am I wrong? What do i do?

avi from an HD camcorder? Usualy they output .m2t, .m2ts, .mts or some type of a highly compressed format. What make and model camcorder do you have? and did it come with a software disk? I have seen some HD camcorders from JVC output .mod files which didn’t open in Vegas until a resent release. They came with a software disk that converted it’s files to avi.

Yes, I have a software disk but to be honest i’ve never used it. My videos that come off the camera play in pretty much any program but won’t load into sony vegas. i find it weird. my camera is a vivitar DVR 840xHD. does that help?

It appears Vegas doesn’t have the codec for that type of avi. I would load the software that came with the camera and see if it’ll convert it to something Vegas sees. If not I would try one of the free video converters out there to do so, like Stream clip for example.

Yes, it shouldn’t be a problem if you were using a “professional” video format but as Danny pointed out, the problem is that Vegas is not expecting HD in an AVI container. You may have to convert the footage into something Vegas can use.

So that’s the first thing to try. If the camera came with software, you should probably install it and figure out what it’s used for. It maight have a conversion program that will convert the footage into something more useful.

I don’t know what codec that camera uses but if it’s AVC/H.264 you might solve the problem by installing the x264vfw codec.
