Sony vegas video preview – jerky playback?

Your laptop is extremely underpowered for editing HD. Sony recommend at least a 2.8Ghz dual core. If the other application you are talking about is a player, they quite often cheat and skip frames to keep playback up. It’s not the same level of processing as editing the footage.

Try matching your project settings to your footage and see if that helps:

John-I’ve had a similar issue. Can you explain what you do once you click match media settings? When I do that, it’s asking me for a file to open. What file am I looking for?

PS-I’ve converted ACVHD files using Cineform Neo Scene (to AVI files) and am experiencing the same jerky playback as described by the other user. I put preview on auto. I thought AVI files would play fine. I’ve got a I-7 3.2 Ghz chip, 12 GB ram, windows 7 64 bit.

After clicking that icon, browse to a folder containing your project files, click on any one of them, click Open and you’ll be brought back to the Properties window again.
The difference is that the video settings will now match your source footage.

If your using Vegas Pro 9.0, it introduced a new feature that many of us disabled almost immediately.
From the Pro 9.0 Readme:
Right-click the Video Preview window and select Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback if you want to emphasize frame rate during preview.
When the command is not selected, video quality is emphasized, and the frame rate will be reduced if necessary.

Thanks for your response. When you say “project files”, are you referring to the veg file, or any of my source clips that I’m using?
BTW-, I am using Vegas 9.0c, and my source files are 720/60p. Both my project and preview windows state: 1280x720x32,59.940p.(I’m not sure what the “x32” is referring to). Yet, when I play, the preview window “preview” changes to 640x360x32. I also right clicked the preview screen, and see that “Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback” is already selected.

I’ve been using Vegas for over 6 years with Mini-DV tape, and moving to AVCHD, I realize just how much I don’t know about Vegas-thanks for your help and patience.

I’m sure that using 60p footage has something to do with your problem. Is there a reason for using such a high frame rate? Are you doing slow motion? Vegas Pro plays back 30fps quite easily but doubling that rate is probably why your computer can’t keep up. I wouldn’t shoot that high a frame rate unless I had a real good reason.

This is a wedding/reception, and I do use slo-mo in a lot of highlights. I have not rendered this out to Mpeg 2 yet. Are you saying 60P is just too much for the preview, or will I experience other issues in rendering as well?

Yes, definitely too much for smooth preview.

Well… you can’t deliver a 60p DVD so rendering is going to have to blend the 60 frames down to 30. This could cause problems. Hopefully Vegas will be smart enough to just drop half of the frames but I’ve never worked with 60p footage so I don’t know what it will do. You might have to disable resample on each event which would force Vegas to drop frames. Like I said, I haven’t worked with 60p but since you can’t deliver in that format, you will definitely need a frame-rate conversion in the end.

I’ve been struggling with the ‘jerky’ effect for a while now, when doing slow motions with HD video and rendering to SD Video.

Disabling re-sample did the trick.

Hey hi there i have the same issue! When i import my clip in Sony Vegas (i tried with 1080 30fps and 720 60fps) it’s realy jerky playback like my computer is not good enaugh.

But i have dual core 3Ghz nvidia 9500 GT and 4GB ram on Win7 32bit.

I also tryed these solutions that are listed here:
– to desable resample (it didn’t work)
– to match your project settings (it also didn’t work)
Still is a quite bad playback.

And i noticed that if i import 720 30fps it works fine it’s normal playback but im frostrated couse i have this amazing camera which can shoot 1080 AT 60FPS (i don’t use that cause youtube don’t accecpt it) and i can also shoot with 30fps(1080 or 720) but playback suck and i can’t edit nothing!

And im not a newbie in sony vegas but it is my first time editing footage higher that 720 30fps …

So any solutions would be welcome!
