  • Sony Vegas Render Quality Problem?

Posted by Liam Connor on September 27, 2015 at 3:15 pm

After much frustration I decided to come for a second opinion on recording and rendering quality for Youtube. I record the game i’m playing with fraps at 1280 by 720 resolution and then render with Sony Vegas pro 13 at highest 1080p rendering settings. However when I upload to Youtube the quality is absolutely horrendous although recorded at 1080p. I was comparing this minecraft clip which I recorded https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnIU7UPktiU to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3DG7x4wy34 in which you can clearly see the drop in quality although we have similar PC specifications and software.

    My computer specs include:
CPU – Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge Quad Core 3.4GHz Turbo
    Motherboard – ASRock Z77 Extreme 6 LGA
VideoCard – EVGA GTX 970 SSC
    32 GB RAM G.SKILL RipJaws X Series

I don’t know if whether the problem is rendering or initial capture quality of the game? If someone could point me in the right direction as to where i’m going wrong it would be much appreciated 🙂

    although recorded at 1080p

One of these statements is incorrect. If its the first, then recording at 720 and rendering at 1080 will look terrible.

If you recorded at 1080, then you will need to provide further information–media info, project settings, and render settings. Preferably screenshots that are readily available in Vegas.

Sorry about that didn’t see I said 720p there. I record at 1080. Although even if I did record and render at 720p it gives me the same result.

Your project settings are messed up–they are set up for HDV-1440 x 1080 interlaced. Change your project settings to match your media properties–e.g. 1920 x 1080 at either 30P or 60P depending upon media. Set PAR to 1.0 and try again.

Thank you again for the quick response. I gave up on 1080p mainly because of the amount of time it was taking to render. I changed the project settings to 720p matched it up with the media like you said and changed the PAR to 1.0. It still appears grainy and pixelated compared to other videos recorded in 720p. Any other suggestions?

I’m not a gamer, but to me, your YT clip looks pretty good. Again, you could post a screen shot of your media properties (or Mediainfo shot) and your new project settings, just to ensure there are no mismatches. E.g. if you capture at 60P and render at 30P, you should definitely disable smart resample.

I’m going to try another game capture to see if that’s the issue but as far as Sony vegas goes thanks so much for the help

Good screenshots. One additional problem, although probably minor, is that your frame rates don’t quite match. Your project settings are 59.94fps while fraps is set to 60 fps. In the future, suggest you change fraps to also capture at 59.94. However, if you’re rendering just for Youtube at 30P (29.97 fps), just capture at that frame rate to start with and change your project and render settings accordingly. You should get faster renders. While Youtube now supports 60P, I find that you get quite a few dropped frames, even with a pretty fast internet connection.
