Sony Vegas Pro 9 – Preview Jerky
Hi there,
I have recently just purchased a panasonic SD10 camcorder that records in HD and stores AVCHD files. When I tried to open the files on my old PC on sony vegas 9 it wouldnt work at all, although i believe this was due to my bad spec.
I have just bought a new Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1546) that has good spec, 4GB ram, 2.8GHZ processor etc – with the hope that it could handle my AVCHD files. Vegas 9 can now open the files and edit, but the preview is extremely jerky at times which makes it impossible to work on. I have raided the internet trying to find solutions (for example holding shift + B – which was pretty useless). I am an amateur on sony vegas and really need to edit a wedding DVD as soon as possible, i would love to edit it in HD and not be forced to convert it to mpeg 2 just for the preview to work.
Are there any simple solutions? If possible as soon as possible.

A-converting to MPEG2 would be foolish.
B-set preview to Preview/Auto
C-be SURE antivirus isn’t running and kill any background apps.Off the shelf laptops are usually crap for editing video. Most folks wipe the drives and reload just the OS and needed apps.
Additionally, if you don’t have a fast drive as a system drive, expect bottlenecks. 5400 RPM drives aren’t fast enough, not for AVCHD.
4GB RAM isn’t much, not if you’re running Win7. I’d say you’re at the barebones minimum.

I was intending to put the final file onto an SD card that they can view on the TV, and to view it straight of the laptop to a projector.
I don’t understand how the footage can play fine in a media player on my system, the audio sounds perfect in vegas as well its just the preview. I notice the lagging is even worse if I try a few crossfades and effects.
I have read a few forums that are saying to compress the files?Thanks

Because the media player is just playing and not editing. It can drop frames and you wouldn’t hardly know it. Vegas is trying to display every frame for editing and your laptop can’t keep up.

Actually, the problem is that the files are too compressed already and your computer is struggling to uncompress them. What you want to do is convert them to a format that is less compressed and easier to edit on your laptop.
One way is to use proxy files. We have a product called VASST GearShift that will create DV Widescreen proxies to edit with. Then you can swap the AVCHD back in for the final render in HD.
Alternately, you could buy Cineform Neo Scene and convert the files to Cineform HD which should edit easier but might not if your latop can’t handle HD at all so it’s best to download the trial of both and see what works better for your computer.
