  • Sony Vegas Pro 9 – No audio on imported MP4 files?

Posted by Jnnjkn Knknkm on August 4, 2013 at 8:16 am

I have 64 MP4 video files around 20 minutes each I’m using for editing and at first it was only showing audio with a video track, but the entire video was black. I looked up a soloution, and downgraded my Quicktime, which fixed the video problem but now when I import any of my videos, it only shows the video, there’s not an audio track at all? (I know there’s nothing wrong with the audio, because I can play it just fine in media players and it worked before)

Use the free program mediainfo to see what codec was used.

On the topic of codecs – NEVER install a codec pack on your editing PC. Those are for gamers and can replace the otherwise good encoding codecs installed by Vegas with inferior ones.

I have K-Lite Codec Pack and x264vfw64 installed, could they be causing the audio to not appear? (I installed them just before I downgraded Quicktime)

I put one of the videos into Mediainfo and this is all the information I got (I’m sorry if it’s more than necessary):

K-Lite is the worst at screwing up Vegas. I would uninstall K-Lite and reinstall Vegas.

I am an advocate of frequent system and component updates with few exceptions. Quicktime is one that I never update because it appears that every QT update also incorporates a host of new incompatibilities with Vegas (Premiere and Avid users have the same complaint). But you must have Quicktime installed to edit some MP4 files.

I never edit AVC files, so I am the wrong source of Quicktime advice. Perhaps someone else can chip in with a recommendation of a working QT version. Once it is working on your PC, don’t upgrade QT.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I uninstall Sony Vegas, will I be able to reinstall without entering a serial code? Because I’ve had SV for years and I have no idea what my serial code was.

You don’t have to uninstall Vegas, just install it again. Your serial key can be found in the Sony website under “My Account” and “My Software”.

Thanks. I uninstalled K-Lite and reinstalled Vegas, but the audio problem is still there.

It says your audio is ID 2? Is that video ripped from a Region 2 DVD? If so, that might be your problem. Guy, help me out.

I’m pretty sure that the audio doesn’t have a region code in the metadata like video does. Besides, in the OP, he said that he had audio but no video until he upgraded QuickTime, and now he has video and no audio.

Chloe – can you play the MP4 file in Quicktime?

Yes the video and audio both play when I open it in Quicktime Player.
