Sony Vegas MPEG2 Render Black Screen
Posted by Kratos Aurion on June 21, 2010 at 9:03 pmIn Sony Vegas, when I render a video as a MPEG2(DVD Architect 24p NTSC video stream, except with Video rendering quality set to Best), it sometimes has a black screen randomly for a couple seconds. Meaning, the video will be playing fine, but will suddenly turn black for a short time. Is this a normal bug?

Well… it isn’t “normal” but it’s definitely a bug! I just saw this in a video I did last week and it drove me crazy! In two places in my 1/2 hr video I got black frames. What I did was rendered to Cineform first and then render the Cineform to MPEG2. That seemed to help.
Also it was worse in Vegas Pro 9.0c so make sure you upgrade to 9.0e. It seems to do it less but it still happens.

June 22, 2010 at 1:29 amHmm. Well the problem here is, I have Sony Vegas Pro 8.0, and I don’t think I’m going to be able to upgrade. Do you have any suggestions for this?

Sometimes when I rendered to Cineform I get black frames there. Then I cut out those frames and render to MPEG2 and it works. Try rendering to Cineform first and remove the black frames manually. This is how I got my project done this last week.

If you are using Vegas Pro 9.0 you’ll need to buy it. It only comes free with earlier versions of Vegas. You could render to Huffyuv or Lagarith. Those are two free lossless codecs that you can find on the internet and install. They will show up under Video for Windows (*.AVI) when you use the Custom button. Like this:
